GALLERY KTOは、東京を拠点とし、新宿と原宿に展示スペースを構える現代アートギャラリーです。2019年の開設以来、高松次郎、ケニー・シャーフ、ベルント・コーバーリングといった国際的に評価の高いアーティストの展覧会を開催するとともに、現代アートに新たな視点をもたらす新進・中堅アーティストの発掘と支援にますます注力しています。

私たちが生きる現代において、アートとは単なる視覚の消費ではありません。それは 「時間と実存の不条理」と対面するための、冷厳な反射表面、ミラーとなります。20世紀後半、西洋美術は絵画の支持体を解体し、物質そのものを提示することで絵画を終わらせようとしました。

しかし、私たちはその「支持体の死」の先に、新たな「表面」の誕生を目撃しています。鏡を覗くとき、私たちは常に自らが進んできた道、すなわち「背後の過去」を見ているのです。写真は過去の光を固定します。しかし、その物質のざらつきが、空間の光を吸い込んでツルっとした平滑な反射表面へと反転するとき、 意味の決定はそれを凝視する観客の側の未来へと突き返されるでしょう。

GALLERY KTOは、具体やモノ派の遺伝子を受け継ぎながら、歴史を単なるノスタルジーに終わらせず、その精神を「いま、ここ」の生へと接続していきます。私たちはいまを生きる作家たちとともに、この「物質（過去）」 と「光（未来）」が交差する極薄の皮膜を追求し、表現を常に刷新していく。

私たちの空間は、ニュートラルなホワイトキューブではありません。観客の身体が介入し、光が遅延し、実存が反転する、世界で最も過激な“知覚の実験場”であり続けます。ここを訪れるすべての人とともに、私たちはアートの新しい地平を体感し、思考を深めていきたいと考えます。。

近年は、特にアジアを中心に国際的なアートフェアへの参加や共同プロジェクトを通じて、日本国外への活動を拡大しており、日本のアーティストが世界中の観客や批評的議論と関わる機会を創出しています。地域の芸術活動と国際的な文脈を結びつけることで、当ギャラリーは持続可能な文化交流を築き、進化し続ける現代アートの風景に貢献することを目指しています。さらに、メインのギャラリースペースに加え、東京の複数の会場で展覧会を企画し、年間約20回の展覧会を開催しています。
こうした活動を通じて、当ギャラリーは、アーティスト、作品、そして観客の間に有意義な出会いを生み出すとともに、現代美術の実践の継続的な発展を支援することを目指しています。

GALLERY KTO is a contemporary art gallery based in Tokyo, with exhibition spaces in Shinjuku and Harajuku. Since its establishment in 2019, the gallery has presented exhibitions by internationally acclaimed artists, including Jiro Takamatsu, Kenny Scharf, and Bernd Koberling, while increasingly focusing on discovering and supporting emerging and mid-career artists who bring new perspectives to contemporary art.

In the contemporary world we inhabit, art is more than a form of visual consumption. It becomes an austere reflective surface—a mirror through which we confront the absurdity of time and existence. In the latter half of the twentieth century, Western art sought to bring painting to an end by dismantling its traditional support and presenting matter itself.

Yet beyond this “death of the support,” we are witnessing the emergence of a new surface. When we look into a mirror, we are always looking at the path we have already traveled—the past that lies behind us. Photography fixes the light of the past. Yet when the roughness of material absorbs the light of a space and transforms into a smooth, seamless reflective surface, the determination of meaning is returned to the future of the viewer who stands before the work and gazes into it.

Inheriting the legacies of Gutai and Mono-ha, GALLERY KTO seeks to move beyond treating history as mere nostalgia, reconnecting its spirit with the lived experience of the here and now. Together with artists working in the present, we explore the exceedingly thin membrane where matter, as the past, intersects with light, as the future, continually renewing the possibilities of artistic expression.

Our spaces are not neutral white cubes. They remain radical laboratories of perception, where the viewer’s body intervenes, light is delayed, and existence is turned inside out. Together with everyone who visits, we seek to experience new horizons in art and deepen our understanding of the world through artistic encounters.

In recent years, GALLERY KTO has expanded its activities beyond Japan through participation in international art fairs and collaborative projects, particularly across Asia. These initiatives create opportunities for Japanese artists to engage with audiences and critical discourse around the world. By connecting local artistic practices with international contexts, the gallery seeks to foster sustained cultural exchange and contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary art.

In addition to its principal gallery spaces, GALLERY KTO organizes exhibitions at multiple venues across Tokyo, presenting approximately 20 exhibitions each year. Through these activities, the gallery aims to foster meaningful encounters among artists, artworks, and audiences while supporting the continued development of contemporary art practice.
