Born in 1943 in Tokushima, Japan. Graduated from Takamatsu Daiichi Koto Gakko in 1962. Studied at Musashino Art University, Tokyo, from 1962 to 1966, where she received a BFA, and completed the Special Course in Painting in 1967. Moved to New York in 1969, where she has lived and worked ever since.
During her late college years at Musashiuno Art University in Tokyo, Junko saw a group show of fresh American art for the first time. In 1969, Junko moved to New York. She changed her art materials from oil on canvas to acrylic and washi. In 1980 Junko had her first solo show at Zabriskie Gallery since moving to New York. All of her works were painted in light gray with tiny colorful dots like beads. Some art critics and artists called Junko’s work “minimal art”. From the 1990’s to the early 2000’s, Junko’s main subject matter has been terrain maps and the twisting course of rivers from aerial views. In 2005, she received a grant from The Pollock - Krasner Foundation. Her works became huge , using plenty of good quality washi from Tokushima Japan. From 2017, Junko started to use photography as part of her materials, combining it with her usual materials like acrylic and washi. By incorporating photographs into her discovery process, she was able to introduce fresh subjects into her work. Her notable series include “Edible Color Chart”, “Lily’s Corner”, TriBeCa Sky”, and “Rear Window”.
